What are the current program numbers and contributions to our community?
Friendly Visitors is a small program, but we maintain between 50 and 60 active matches, while constantly enrolling new seniors and volunteers. In 2009 alone, volunteers made more than 1,800 visits to lonely seniors throughout Whatcom County with 2,600 hours of visitation.
The positive impact on our senior community is not limited to the senior receiving the visits. Of our volunteer makeup, more than 65% of them are over the age of 60 themselves. This means that we also are able to have an impact on our senior volunteers; educating them about common senior concerns and needs, available resources, and the importance of planning for their own future before they have a severe need.
